El Capo, Nottingham.
My preference for dinner always aligns with Mexican cuisine, it's my favourite. Myself and Jordan are always discovering new and exciting Mexican restaurants for us to get our taste buds involved in. Nottingham's new Mexican venue, El Capo invited us along to sample some of their food and with the cold winds outside, it definitely was the winter warmer we were after. With only one other side of this restaurant in Manchester's thriving Northern Quarter, I was excited to see what its Nottingham branch would have to offer.
Located on Broad Street, it has transformed the space where the Rum House in the Hockley area of Nottingham once stood. The space has been transformed into a South American cantina with Latin influences through the atmospheric music and artwork all over the walls.
El Capo is definitely about enjoying good fun and accompanying it with their vast variety of tequila and cocktails. I noticed that the restaurant ran promotions throughout the week, appealing to a city that hosts people from all walks of life. Promotions such as Taco Tuesdays, where all Tacos are £1 and Wings Wednesday, wings just 50p each that sound great value for money. Perfect choice of food if you were heading out for a drink and a nibble with your friends after work.
We noticed on our visit how they also provided products which were Gluten Free. Our waitress was very assertive with another guest next to us in advising her on the best of their products for this dietary requirement.
There's all the Mexican street food favourites, burritos, tacos, nachos but also with a stamp of personality with some dishes of their own. We got stuck right in with a delivery of chip and dip whilst we browsed through the menu, there was a lot of choices!
I decided to take it easy on my visit and decided on their soft corn tortilla Tacos. There was a lot of filling to choose from so I decided to sample 2 of the ones they provided. The Chicken was a dry rubbed meat in seven secret, spices and something smoky. The Pulled Beef filling was rubbed beef brisket slow roasted with spiced honey. Both of the meats in the taco were very soft and full of flavour. I'm not much of a spice fan so this suited my weak spice buds ok!
Being a big fan of Mac and Cheese, I had to sample their side of the stuff and it was delicious. It was definitely the cooler flavour you'd need if you had something slightly spicier.
I'm not sure what overcame Jordan on this visit but he decided to order quite a few products from the menu, with the addition of taking full advantage of Wings Wednesday (wings at 50p each!) He accompanied this with a Pulled Beef Burrito, and a side of the Cheesy Chilli Fries (which looked delicious but I couldn't sample for myself, apparently they were quite spicy!)
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at El Capo, before heading to the restaurant we did notice quite a few negative comments online. Having experienced it for me the food was delicious, full of flavour and the waiting staff ensured we had a comfortable evening dining with them. They were very assertive to the various different products on their menu, including recommendations of their own which were great for indecisive people like me and Jordan on our visit.
