REVIEW | Treason The Musical In Concert

Treason The Musical

★★★★

Treason is an exciting new musical drama that surfaced with its first track from the album on the 415th anniversary of the infamous gunpowder plot last November. Its concept covers the notorious gunpowder plot of 1605. The album, constructed with a stunning score and lyrics by Ricky Allan was received with huge eagerness for what could come next. The musical itself is still in development but the recent concert ignited excitement for a full-scale production of this show in the future.

Filmed at Cadogan Hall during the lockdown with Covid protocols in place, this concert gives us 55 minute of pure musical joy. Treason focuses predominately on the events building up to the failed assassination attempt; with a brilliant insight to the passionate plotters and the impact on their loved ones. It is a big subject to cover in such a short space of time but with the help of a Narrator (Debris Stevenson), she helps to fill in the gaps for this concert.

They have brought together a stellar cast to deliver the passion behind Hannah Chissick‘s vision for this musical. Oliver Tompsett, Lucie Jones and Daniel Boys gave engaging performances as their characters, but there is a clear vision that these do need developing further to become more refined. The songs in Treason are gorgeous and you are most certainly witnessing the craft of creating a new musical score in your home. ‘When Will I See You Again’ is beautifully heart-breaking and powerful in equal measures. There are so many tracks I could listen to just as repeatedly as those of the bigger shows on the musical circuit.

It wasn’t necessarily a musical of my own flavour but the passion and focus for this new musical just oozes off the Cadogan Hall. Although you know how this story ends in the history books, there is a real flame for how compelling Treason was to watch. I really hope we see a full scale production rise up in the next few months!
