Billy Elliot The Musical
Curve, Leicester
★★★★

It's not just the hot weather on everyone's lips this summer in Leicester, Curve's highly anticipated production of a much loved musical has returned to the stage after 6 years with an almighty force! With an award-winning and world class reputation under its belt, Billy Elliot The Musical will stun and inspire new audiences in this phenomenal revival.

Nikolai Foster has used his influence on developing a fresh and engaging production style to bring a new level of energy to Billy Elliot The Musical. The backdrop is 1984/5 - an era implanted in British history. Its impact on delivery as a musical production is immediate and its relevance to today's poor government and expanding living crisis is a stark reminder of the reality we're all facing. Although it has a heavy political reference there is still a crystal clear message that its important for young people to follow their dreams. A message which is deeply engraved in Foster's production and for the future of this industry.

Aesthetically this is the boldest production which Leicester's Curve has ever produced. The attention to detail is flawless. Ben Cracknell delivers atmospheric lighting which really heightens the stage. Lucy Hind explores new and innovative ways of working with Elton John and Lee Hall's musicality of this production. 'Solidarity' is the perfect example of innovation from this creative team to create unforgettable theatre. It was a gold nugget of theatre I won't be forgetting in a hurry.

Taking on the task of leading the company is a huge task for a young boy, especially when there is a reputation for producing some exceptional talent. Layton Williams and Tom Holland previously undertook the role of Billy during its 11 years in London, however Jaden Shentall-Lee is comfortable in these shoes. Jaden is a spectacular dancer aligned with the vocal ability and stage presence to make the audiences stare at him in awe. His rendition of 'Electricity' capsulated what a fantastic performer he is and his passion oozes through every breathe of this production.

FLASHBACK: Behind The Scenes of Billy Elliot UK Tour, 2017

The audience lapped up local boy Prem Masani as Billy's best friend Michael. Encouraged by his drama teacher in Leicester to audition, he is a sheer delight to watch and paired so well with Jaden Shentall-Lee. Their triumph anthem to being who you are in 'Expressing Yourself' really struck a chord. It's witty but yet incredibly powerful lyrics were completed with the use of colour and sparkle - particularly with the help of the entire young cast!

The production had an equally superb supporting cast, from Billy's dad (Joe Caffrey), Tony (Luke Baker) and foul mouthed Grandma (Rachel Izen), who delivered perfect scene-stealing moments in the production. Dance teacher, Mrs Wilkinson (Sally Ann Triplett) managed to take a welcoming new stance on this role with fantastic delivery.

As a fan of the original 2005 stage production the only downside was that there were a lot of great elements from it which didn't transfer to this new revival. The strength of connection with the father and son relationship was lost for me, with more of an emphasis on Billy and the world around him. I was gutted not to see the hideous Maggie Thatcher puppet in 'Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher' too. Although there are some positive new elements - including more of a role for Billy's Mum (played by Jessica Daley) whose influence is endearing in this production.

All in all, Curve's Billy Elliot The Musical champions young talent and an inspiring production for all to see! It's definitely a must-see show in Leicester this summer!

Billy Elliot The Musical is performing at Curve, Leicester until 20 Aug. You can book your tickets here
