Kilworth House is a hidden gem nestled in Leicestershire. The open-air theatre is set within the beautiful grounds of Kilworth House Hotel in South Leicestershire. With 15 years of experience under its belt, it produces some of the best large-scale musical productions outside of the West End.

After the success of Carousel at the beginning of their summer season, now they're back with a belter of a show. Half A Sixpence is playing at the Kilworth House Theatre until 28 August.

This revival of the production is based on the 2016 Chichester Festival Theatre production. The original 1963 musical comedy was based on the 1905 novel 'Kipps' by H.G. Wells, with music and lyrics by David Heneker and a book by Beverley Cross. Fast forward to 2016 and the musical was completely regenerated. It came with an entirely new book and George Stiles and Anthony Drewe adapted Heneker's original songs as well as created new musical material.

Half a Sixpence shares the story of Arthur Kipps changing fortunes. He is an orphan and draper's assistant at Shalford's Bazaar in Folkestone, Kent at the start of the 20th century. Arthur is an easy-going working-class man but along with his fellow apprentices, dreams of a more fulfilling world. Fortunately for Arthur, he inherits a fortune and is suddenly thrust into high society. He catches the eye of a money-grabbing family and Helen Walsingham whilst his childhood sweetheart watches helplessly as Arthur becomes overwhelmed by this unknown world. When Kipp loses his fortune, he is reminded of his roots and where his heart truly lies.

Kilworth's production of this joyous show was directed and choreographed by Nick Winston. Nick is a household name at the Leicestershire theatre having worked on quite a lot of their shows over recent years. There is no doubt that his style in this production soars. He manages to do the things that a revival should do for shows like this. Excitement oozes from the wings of this expansive space from start to finish.

Jason Taylor's lighting paired with Philip Witcomb's set and design is gorgeous. The level of detail really enhances the Kilworth Stage. Their stage is hugely adaptable and transformed into a spectacular vision of British joy. (although there wasn't a drop of good British weather in sight!)

This cast triumphs in this show.  Half A Sixpence is an energetic production and these performers do not miss a beat of the vibrant choreography. It is exhausting watching them. 'Flash, Bang, Wallop!' protrudes out amongst the rest, although there are other spectacular big musical numbers integrated into the rest of the show for good measure.

Dominic Sibanda is a sheer delight as the leading man. His portrayal of Arthur is almost natural, he blends so well into the entire production. Laura Baldwin gives off a wonderfully warm performance as Ann. Her strong-willed but big-hearted character oozes charm. Perfectly self-assured Helen Walsingham is stunningly portrayed by Sarah Goggin's performance.

Half a Sixpence is the perfect British summer musical to get your heart into. The joy of theatre is right here in Kilworth House Theatre!

You have until 28 August to see this show.
