INTERVIEW | Olly Novello, The Verge of Forever

Written by Emmie.

An exciting new song cycle is heading to The Other Palace for a limited time this August. The Verge of Forever is defined as a timeless tale of love, ambition, and sacrifice, showcasing the struggles that come with pursuing one’s artistic passions.

Leo and Marie are two talented teenagers who share a passion for the theatre. The Verge of Forever follows them as they undertake the journey through drama school auditions.

There is a boom with new musicals right now and this is no exception so who better to chat with about it than Olly Novello. Novello is the composer and orchestrator of this new musical as well as starring in it alongside Scarlett Ayers.

Where did your journey into theatre begin?

My journey began with a firm tug from pantomime's embrace - I was only a toddler, lingering beyond the final curtain. As a composer, my path took root during the Off West End premiere of Danielle Tarento's "Titanic." Serendipitously, I encountered the incredible Maury Yeston at the premiere of "Death Takes a Holiday," and his encouragement left a profound impact. At that juncture, I was immersed in studying Bach, and suddenly, a world of possibilities unfolded before me. Since then, my resolve has been unwavering, fueled by the relentless pursuit of my passion.

You’ve written music and lyrics for ‘The Journey to Paradise’ which is to receive a workshop at the end of the year, as well as being commissioned to write the music for another new musical. This is exciting! What drew you to writing music as part of your developing career?

I genuinely believe that music stands as the purest form of art. It offers a canvas to portray characters in a manner that embraces ambiguity, leaving everything open to interpretation. My fascination with writing has been there since the very day I learned to play the piano.

What are your biggest influences?

My biggest influences stem from the classical world. I have spent a lot of time with Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven under my fingers, as well as playing church music for two years. While my music is very different, I consider this experience to be the ultimate form of training.

The Verge of Forever is an exciting new song cycle coming to The Other Palace, how long has it taken to develop it?

I wrote this score in a month because I was desperate to get out of the drama school where I was studying. I had a fantastic time during my foundation at GSA, but I found the people at the subsequent school to be the worst you can encounter in our industry. They embodied everything that is wrong with the Musical Theatre world.

What is The Verge of Forever about?

"The Verge of Forever" captures the essence of every drama school student's experience, delving into a world dominated by producers and drama schools, a reality that troubles me deeply. As I embark on my journey to the other side, I understand the core of being a performer – the vital role of kindness from producers in shaping our paths. The show wholeheartedly celebrates the unsung heroes, often overlooked, while challenging the prevailing belief in the value of degrees. It reveals that a performer's true essence lies in that elusive spark of brilliance, unteachable and unique to each individual.

Will the themes in this production appeal to other young people do you think?

Yes but this show is not for everyone. If you exist in this social media world and like weird theatre, then "The Verge Of Forever" is for you, you'll get it. If not, I'd recommend a trip to Les Mis.

Who will The Verge of Forever appeal to?

"The Verge of Forever" is for the youth of today - my generation. Every other writer who tackles this issue seems to dismiss our generation with a pop score. This show is dedicated to those who cherish showbiz.

Do you hope that this production will develop into something further, if so, where would you like to see it?

Yes!! I have a few things already lined up.

Why should people come and see The Verge of Forever?

It's completely weird and covers topics that not everyone will relate to. But if you get it, it'll hit every nerve.

The Verge of Forever is at The Other Palace 8 – 20 August 2023. Tickets are on sale here.
