REVIEW | Billionaire Boy, Birmingham Stage Company

BILLIONAIRE BOY
BIRMINGHAM STAGE COMPANY
★★★

The Birmingham Stage Company is one of the world's leading producers of theatre for children and their families, inspiring young audiences with their adaptations coming right from the pages of some of the most beloved stories. Now in its 29th year, Billionaire Boy is the latest production heading on the road across the UK. This production has also just been nominated for a Olivier Award for Best Family Show and after seeing it for myself, I can see why!

Neal Foster, who adapted and directs this production, has a brilliant piece of live theatre that will introduce and inspire children to this art form. They can see their favourite stories come to life on the stage! Billionaire Boy is jam-packed with silliness, an inspiring set and catchy original songs that will definitely have the audience humming them in their heads for days after. What is even better is that there is a wonderful feel-good message beneath all of the fun that will resonate with audiences, no matter what their age.

The 9 member cast are superb. The small cast play numerous characters and their transitions between each of them is fluid and well rehearsed. Each of them managed to incorporate different characteristics that make their characters so fulfilled. Matthew Gordon leading the way as Joe, spending 98% of the show on the stage and not letting his performance drop in energy. Rosie Coles is infectiously funny as Sapphire and Emma Matthews is a wild school cook who definitely gets a lot of giggles from the audience!

Billionaire Boy is a must see for all fans of David Walliams books! If you laughed reading his stories, you'll certainly laugh throughout this production. It's good fun and a great piece of inspiring theatre for young audiences.
