I can’t think of many examples where I’ve seen an audience laugh within the first minute of a play, however, Illyria’s production of The Gondoliers had audience members belly laughing before it had even begun.

The Gondoliers is a light-hearted and extremely entertaining operetta following the story of two gondoliers who suddenly find themselves in a predicament of choosing between unconditional love and unfulfilled duty. This play highlights the importance of true love and perseverance, even when being kept away from that very thing you love the most. Whilst being a familiar plot recited throughout the years within many stories, This amazing cast somehow managed to make the audience gasp at every turn and twist throughout the story. With every line sung and every word spoken, You are truly left in awe by the way this small cast is able to portray the story in such a charming and comedic way.

The entire play was filled with skilful quick changes, Witty punchlines and very impressive vocals. Leading for not one moment to be even a little dull with this talented group of actors. Each person in the cast is equipped with a voice so powerful even audience members at the far back in such an open space could hear and follow the story along without a fear of anything important being missed out; The over the top expressions and body language used by each member of the cast could allow for somebody not so familiar with the ways of operetta storytelling to decipher what’s happening in every scene, not a single detail was missed out by the cast in the end.

The set, costumes and props were very minimalistic, however, the small amount that was used benefitted the charm and humorous outlook of the story. Every physical and verbal joke was executed perfectly. The simple fact it’s outdoors leads to a great production to bring the whole family to watch as nobody is confined to a seat in an enclosed place, and you can choose to sit as close or as far from the action as you wish. The Gondoliers is the perfect watch for a summer evening, and after two hours (not including a 20 minute interval for a quick set change) of pure joy and laughter, you’re left wanting more long after it’s over.

This summer Illyria are taking 3 other productions on the road; Romeo and Juliet, The Hound of Baskervilles and The Adventures of Doctor Dolittle.

Across the UK until 7 September 2024, further information here
