Interview: Jamie Leonard, ‘‘WONDER BOY’

Conducted by Emmie for Theatre and Tonic

As anticipation builds for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, we’re catching up with a range of exciting creatives who are preparing to bring their work to the world’s largest arts festival this August. In this series, we dive into the stories behind the shows, the inspiration driving the artists, and what audiences can expect.

Today we’re joined by magician Jamie Leonard to find out more about his show, WONDER BOY.

1. Can you begin by telling us about your show and what inspired it?

Wonder Boy is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud comedy magic show full of unexpected twists, impossible illusions, and genuine moments of wonder. I’ve taken everything I love about magic – slick sleight of hand, big reactions, and real connection with the audience – and blended it with sharp comedy and storytelling. The inspiration came from wanting to push my act to the next level, to build a show that feels personal, fun, and full of surprises.

2. What made you want to bring this work to the Fringe this year?

The Fringe has always been the place where performers challenge themselves and showcase their best work. After touring the UK and even performing for the Saudi Royal Family, I knew it was time to bring Wonder Boy to the biggest stage of them all. It’s my debut in a bigger venue – the Gilded Balloon Patter Hoose – and I’m beyond excited to share this show with such a diverse and brilliant audience.

3. How would you describe your show in three words?

Funny. Mind-blowing. Charming.

4. What do you hope audiences take away from watching your performance?

I want people to leave Wonder Boy feeling like they’ve just witnessed something truly impossible – but also like they’ve had a proper laugh. It’s not just about the tricks; it’s about the fun, the unpredictability, and the joy of being amazed. If they leave smiling and still trying to work out how I did something, that’s mission accomplished.

5. What’s your top tip for surviving the Fringe?

Stay caffeinated, stay curious, and don’t try to see everything – but do support other artists when you can. Oh, and always carry an umbrella.

6. Where and when can people see your show?

Wonder Boy is on at the Gilded Balloon Patter Hoose from the 30th of July to the 3rd of August at 16:15. Just five nights – don’t miss it!
