What’s the Craic, God? at Bothie at Gilded Balloon Patter House Review
A one woman show about growing up in Ireland in a family that expects certain things from you, whilst also trying to understand your sexuality, What’s the craic, God? explores how Aoife tries her best to balance everything and still be happy.
Rebecca Donovan stars as a seventeen-year-old Aoife, thriving throughout the piece, never once slowing down and being able to carry a sometimes heavily weighted script with a lightness. The piece does feel fairly similar to a lot of other fringe shows, dealing with topics that almost seem over explored, but this particular show makes sure not to use any of them to the extent they become obsolete.
I do think that the piece might have worked a little better with a somewhat bigger stage and maybe a backdrop or a larger prop centred around the religious aspect of the show. But will say that Rebecca does a good job of being able to articulate everything she wishes to say both verbally and physically.
What’s the craic, God? performs like a Susan Boyle album, there’s a few good songs here and there but is mainly made up of covers that have been around for years already.
