The Hottest Theatre News This Week (07-13 April 2025)

Another week means another roundup of the top 10 news stories from Theatre and Tonic. We’re now into Spring, and with that, there have been some exciting announcements recently.

In this weekly edition, we bring you the most exciting theatre updates—brand-new show announcements, cast reveals, and maybe even a tantalising rumour or two. Whether it's a groundbreaking West End debut or a hidden gem from the regional stage, this bite-sized bulletin has it all. We’ll be back next week with another dose of our hottest theatre news this week!

Winners of the 2025 Olivier Awards were revealed

We kicked off the weekend still buzzing from the Olivier Awards held at the Royal Albert Hall on the 6 April. Some of the Theatre and Tonic were there for the evening and were thrilled by the results. The big winners of the night were The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Giant, who both shared three wins, including Best New Musical and Best New Play. Other notable wins of the evening were Layton Williams for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical (Titanique) and Imelda Staunton for Best Actress in a Musical (Hello, Dolly!). We’re already counting down the days until next year’s event!

The Wind in the Willows: The New Musical to stream on National Theatre at Home

If you want to watch some of the best stage productions from the comfort of your home, National Theatre at Home is a fantastic streaming platform for theatre lovers. Joining the fold of fantastic productions like Life of Pi and Waitress The Musical, amongst access to over 100 productions in May, is The Wind in the Willows: The New Musical. Based on the beloved novel by Kenneth Grahame, the show played in the West End in 2017.

Ncuti Gatwa and Edward Bluemel to star in Born With Teeth in the West End this summer

Liz Duffy Adams’s thrilling new play, Born with Teeth is heading to the West End this summer. Directed by RSC Co-Artistic Director Daniel Evans, the story reimagines the relationship between the two literary icons William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, who are at odds with their time. Born with Teeth will play at the Wyndham’s Theatre from 13 August to 1 November. Tickets go on sale 16 April 2025 at BornWithTeethPlay.com.

Ivo Van Hove to direct new production of All My Sons

More exciting new show announcements came through this week with the news that All My Sons, Arthur Miller’s powerful American tragedy, would be heading to London’s West End for a limited season later this year. Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths), Paapa Essiedu (Death of England: Delroy) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) will star in the production with further casting to be announced soon. All My Sons will play at the Wyndham’s Theatre from 14 November 2025 to 7 February 2026. Tickets are now on sale at allmysonsplay.com.

Girl from the North Country announces return to the London stage

The Tony and Olivier Award-winning production Girl from the North Country is heading back to where it premiered, The Old Vic, this summer. Featuring a company of 23 actors and musicians, Conor McPherson’s production features music and lyrics by Bob Dylan. Billed as a ‘play with music’, Girl from the North Country centres its story on the community of Duluth in 1934 as they battle their way through the Great Depression. Girl from the North Country will play at The Old Vic from 24 Jun - 23 August 2025. 

Cast and creatives announced for Miss Myrtle’s Garden at Bush Theatre

The world premiere, which will provide audiences with a life-affirming exploration of how we acknowledge the past and confront life in the present head-on, will play at the Bush Theatre from 31 May. Written by Danny James King and directed by Taio Lawson, the cast includes Michael Ahomka-Lindsay, Mensah Bediako, Diveen Henry, Gary Lilburn and Elandar Moore. Miss Myrtle’s Garden touches on the themes of dementia, same sex relationships, and the importance of access to outside space for all. It plays at the Bush Theatre from 31 May - 12 July 2025.

Clueless The Musical extends its run in the West End

Based on the Paramount Pictures film and inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, Clueless The Musical opened in the West End last month and has already announced an extension to its run. (Read our review here if you fancy knowing our thoughts!) Written by Amy Heckerling, who is the movie’s original writer-director, and featuring new music by KT Tunstall, the beloved characters are brought to life by a stellar cast - including Emma Flynn, who makes her debut as Cher Horowitz. Clueless The Musical is now playing at the Trafalgar Theatre until 28 March 2026.

Anoushka Lucas’ award-winning Elephant to run in London

Directed by Jess Edwards, Elephant will run at the Menier Chocolate Factory for a limited run following two successful runs at the Bush Theatre, where it was developed. Anoushka Lucas will return in the reimagined new production, which is part gig, part musical love story, part journey through Empire. Elephant tells a bold and magnetic story of identity in 21st-century Britain. The play will run at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 22 May until 28 June 2025. 

Brixton House to premiere new show Millennium Girls this May

An exciting new debut play from Sophia Leonie is heading to the Brixton House in May. Inspired by real events, Millennium Girls explores mixed-race identity, girlhood and consent with an all-female cast against a musical backdrop of UK Garage and 90s classics. There’s also late-night DJ sets planned at ‘House Lates’ for some of the performances if you want to continue the nostalgic vibes after the show finishes. Nkhanise Phiri, Tamara Camacho and Unique Spencer will star alongside Sophia in the play, which runs from 12-31 May 2025. 

Rose Theatre announces 2025/26 season including World Premiere of Jane Austen’s Emma

Looking ahead to an exciting work season, Rose Theatre revealed this week what they have planned for their audiences. Highlights from their announcement include a world premiere of a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, running from 17 September, Private Lives starting on 14 October, and a festive family adventure, Cinderella, which will run from 28 November 2025.
