10 Musicals To Stream Over Christmas

WRITTEN BY RONI

The weather is turning, the nights are drawing in and we are increasingly finding ourselves sitting in front of the t.v each night looking for the perfect thing to watch over a tub of Quality Street. If you’re looking for a way to combine Christmas and a love of theatre, or to switch it up entirely, here’s a handy guide to the top musicals to stream over the festive period.

Funny Girl (Sky Arts/Now TV)

Whilst not a new arrival by any means, this 2017 version of the classic show ties in nicely with the current Broadway revival that has been making waves this year. Filmed lived at Manchester’s Palace Theatre and starring Sheridan Smith,  this is for the nostalgics amongst us who love our winter comfort blankets.

Dr Suess’ The Grinch Musical! (Sky Max/Now TV)

Now. Listen. This one is not everyone’s cup of tea. Its initial reception in 2020 was… mixed to say the least. However, it is very on brand for the time of year and is always worth giving a go for the warm fuzzies it inevitably brings. Matthew Morrison of Glee fame heads this one, giving us arguably the most interesting performance of his career.

Mamma Mia (Sky Cinema/Now TV)

If Christmas isn’t your thing (bah! Humbug!) and you find yourself dreaming of sunnier climates at this time of year, then what better than the gorgeous shores of Greece? Find your summer getaway vibes amongst the Abba tunes with this fan favourite which never gets old – no matter how many times you’ve had the soundtrack on repeat since 2008… guilty as charged, your honour.

Les Miserables (Amazon Prime)

This may seem like an odd choice to recommend for Christmas viewing, and I get it. This one is hardly known for its joy and cheer. However, there is something about Les Mis that means you still come away feeling uplifted, despite containing some of the most depressing themes of any musical. At the very least, even Granny will be giving you her best rendition of I Dreamed A Dream after a few sherries.

Tick Tick Boom (Netflix)

Unless you were living under a rock for most of 2021, you’ll be at least aware of this screen adaptation based on the work of the late Jonathan Larson. There are some big names attached to this – Andrew Garfield stars, with Lin Manuel Miranda directing and producing. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the theatre world went crazy for it. A little melancholy, but if you haven’t caught it yet, it’s a must see.

Hairspray (Netflix)

  • It could just be me, but Hairspray is one of those ultimate feel good musicals no matter what time of year it is. The 2007 version starring John Travolta, Zac Efron and Queen Latifah is no different, with all the glitz and catchy tunes needed to get the whole family watching and singing along during the Christmas break.

Spirited (AppleTV)

  • This is a new offering this holiday season, an AppleTV original with a stellar cast. Billed as ‘Scrooge – but funnier’, the movie stars Will Ferrell (Buddy the Elf himself?!), Ryan Reynolds and Octavia Spencer. As if that wasn’t enough, it also features an original soundtrack by – wait for it – Pasek and Paul. Yes. The Oscar/Grammy/Tony/Olivier award winning/ Dear Evan Hansen/The Greatest Showman writing Pasek and Paul. Sold.

Hamilton (Disney+)

It may have been available since the first COVID lockdown (remember that one? I can still smell the banana bread now), but as pro shots go, it doesn’t get much better than this. The original Broadway cast of Hamilton shines their way through a two and a half hour show that feels like mere minutes. A good one to really get the family debating their history and politics over the leftover turkey.

Newsies (Disney+)

Another relevant tie in at the moment as we enjoy the UK premiere of this magnificent show is the 2017 pro shot of Newsies. With Jeremy Jordan at the helm, you can be sure the theatre fans are in for a treat. This is definitely the one to watch to whet your appetite if you’re planning on taking a trip to Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre any time soon.

Nativity (Netflix)

Do I even need to say it? If you’ve never seen Nativity, then you’re missing out. Big style. From director Debbie Isitt comes the most joyous and Christmassy movie musical you’ll ever experience. With some big names including Martin Freeman and Pam Ferris, this is one that hits the spot every time. Fantastic viewing for kids and adults alike, I dare you not to be singing Sparkle and Shine well into the new year.
