Birthmarked, Brook Tate Review

Birthmarked is phenomenal.
That could very easily be my whole review but I'll do my best to explain why.
Birthmarked is a semi-improvised, autobiographical gig-inspired piece of musical theatre, in which the audience become a congregation, journeying deep underwater to meet a whale called Gail and hear Brook Tate's story: a disfellowshipped Jehovah's Witness and it is simply wonderful. Framing his story around Jonah and the whale is a bold choice but works beautifully with all the parallels drawn with times of depression, fear, darkness, friendship and hope. Such care is taken with these delicate topics, particularly religious trauma, throughout the show that it feels like a warm, life-affirming hug.
Brook is joined on stage by his wonderful band who bring the story to life: Tom Bonson, Eddie Benfield, Sam Fox, Sam Fox and starring as Gail as well as on percussion: Eva Redman. The camaraderie between them is evident, and it is a joy to watch these friends perform together; they're a sure sign of hope if there ever was one.
With a beautiful voice and an obvious flair for songwriting, Brook refuses to be constrained to a single genre or style, from traditional hymnal style to layered a capella creations with ballads and falsetto heavy pop songs in between, and ending with a tap dancing zebra in a full musical theatre showstopper all of which worked perfectly, it is clear there is no limit to their skills.

I have to admit I was apprehensive as to how Birthmarked would work; how it could be comical without being critical, how it would deal with the sensitive nature of the story and how on earth this included songs, but it works because above all it is honest. Brook has declared 'here I am, and this is my story' and it is fabulous.
No other show is like this. Birthmarked is a light in the darkness, a voice for those ostracised, and a bold encouragement to all not be ashamed for being you.
I cannot implore you enough: go and see this incredible show!
