A group of friends is preparing an intervention for Clara, who now believes the earth is flat. They will try to make her see sense, but instead, they will face harsh truths about themselves and realize that they have all been keeping secrets from each other.
Conspiranoia features an incredible cast, as Catalan plays usually do; I think I say this in every review! Eduard Farelo, Àurea Márquez, David Vert, and Mia Esteve form a convincing and heterogeneous friend group with their remarkable chemistry. All the characters are well-constructed and believable, each distinct from one another. I especially loved Eduard Farelo’s portrayal of Roger, Clara’s husband, and the instigator of the intervention; he was very amusing and entertaining to watch with his little quirks and speech mannerisms.
La Villarroel has a very interesting structure in which the stage is in the middle, and two sets of seats surround it on both sides. Therefore, the public has a somewhat different experience depending on what side they’re on, with some characters getting closer to them than others at different times. As there are no curtains or wings, the actors remain on stage for most of the show, which allows the public to have a fuller experience.
The show was incredibly funny and contemporary, with some dramatic moments that made the story feel much more real to the audience. It also offered some interesting insights on long-term friendships and secrets: Do we keep things from our friends to spare them pain, or because it’s easier for us to do nothing? Where does willingness to help turn into an attempt to control someone’s life?
I thoroughly enjoyed the blend of comedy and drama in the show, which made for a well-rounded story that showcased each character. I would recommend this to anyone who appreciates a good laugh!
Conspiranoia will be playing at La Villarroel until the 2nd of June.
