Dagoll Dagom – 50th Anniversary Celebrations and Mar I Cel Presentation Review

Dagoll Dagom, one of the most well-known Catalan theatre companies, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a series of events. After that, the company will bid its final farewell, ending an incredibly long and successful track record. This is a bittersweet moment for the founders and every member of the company, and so they put together an impressive and touching event to celebrate its journey throughout time. It was an extremely emotional moment for me as well as a Catalan theatre enthusiast, so I am very grateful to have been invited to this historic moment!
Over the course of fifty years, Dagoll Dagom has created 5 TV shows, 23 musicals, and has received an audience of 4.7 million viewers. To pay tribute to their incredible legacy, they will be releasing a commemorative theatre programme with images of some of their most iconic productions, as well as testimonies from some of its members. An exposition will be installed in Teatre Victòria with pictures, costumes, and more memorabilia displayed. A vinyl record is also being released, and I’m really eager to get my hands on it!
Daniel Anglès will be directing La gran nit de Dagoll Dagom, a special gala to commemorate the company’s long career, and it will feature many actors that have participated in their shows, such as Carlos Gramaje, Roger Berruezo or Ana San Martín.
Last but certainly not least, Dagoll Dagom is presenting a new production of Mar i Cel, its greatest success and what I would call the quintessential Catalan musical. The show, based on Àngel Guimerà’s play, with music by Albert Guinovart and text by Xavier Bru de Sala, premiered in 1988. It was revived in 2004 and 2014, and finally, it will be played one last time in 2024. It was also translated into Spanish and performed in Madrid, Bilbao, and Zaragoza, and it even had a German production in 2007.
Mar i Cel narrates the love story of Saïd, a Muslim pirate ship captain, and Blanca, a Christian girl, in the 17th century. The show explores themes of religious and cultural prejudice, tolerance and compassion. Jordi Garreta will be playing Saïd, Alèxia Pascual will be Blanca, and Eloi Gómez will be Ferran. I’m very excited to see this new cast in action!
Mar i Cel will be back at the Teatre Victòria, its original home, in September 2024.
