Dial M for Mayhem is a comedy-drama presented by Middle Ground Theatre Company, currently running at the Darlington Hippodrome. Set in 1991, the play follows a troupe of actors touring the Scottish Highlands with their rendition of "Dial M for Murder." The production delves into the backstage chaos and interpersonal dynamics of the cast, blending elements of farce and slapstick humour.
Written by Margaret May Hobbs, the play takes inspiration from classic farces and whodunits, weaving a story of behind-the-scenes theatrical mishaps with sharp humour and a nostalgic 1990s setting. Directed by Michael Lunney, the production contrasts the on-stage murder mystery and the off-stage mayhem of the actors' touring lives. The set design cleverly recreates the atmosphere of a small-town theatre, while the period costumes add authenticity to the era. With an experienced creative team behind it, the play delivers a mix of laugh-out-loud moments and subtle nods to the struggles of life in a touring theatre company.
The script of the play does seem to grapple with its identity, however, oscillating between moments of lively slapstick humour and extended stretches of dialogue that slow the pacing. While the comedic elements shine, the transitions between high-energy scenes and more static moments could be more fluid to maintain engagement and narrative momentum. A more consistent balance between action and dialogue might enhance the overall impact.
The cast delivered a spirited performance, embracing this blend of humour and backstage drama with enthusiasm. The comedic timing is particularly strong, with each actor fully committing to the physical humour and farcical elements. Standout performances come from Joey Lockhart, whose expressive delivery adds charm to every scene, and Isabella Inchbald, whose deadpan wit provides a perfect counterbalance to the chaos. While some moments of dialogue could be more dynamically paced, the cast’s energy and chemistry ensure that the play remains engaging throughout.
A riotous mix of comedy and chaos, Dial M for Mayhem keeps audiences on their toes! While the play navigates between energetic slapstick and slower, dialogue-heavy moments, it ultimately delivers an evening of theatrical fun. With a charming cast and a nostalgic setting, this production offers plenty of laughs and backstage intrigue. For those who enjoy a blend of farce, mystery, and a touch of mayhem, it's a show worth experiencing.
At Darlington Hippodrome until 22 February 2025. Other productions heading to the theatre soon are Pirates Love Underpants, The Rocky Horror Show and Pincocchio. Full information can be found here.
