REVIEW | Newsies, London

It’s not often I’m left lost for words, or struggle to put my thoughts on paper, but my GOD has Newsies made it tricky…

I’d be lying if I said I walked into the show without any apprehension, mainly in worry that perhaps the production may try to ride the success of the Broadway production but if anything, dare I say it, it knocks it out of the park.

Playing at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, which is an incredible space, the production team at Newsies have thought of absolutely everything. The show is hugely immersive, and it’s impossible to pick up every tiny detail as it’s just that impeccable. There are certain nods to fan favourite moments from the Broadway production (E,g: THAT newspaper dance) but done in a fresh take that doesn’t lend feelings of copying at all.

Michael Ahomka and Bronté Barbé lead the company impeccably. I had the pleasure of seeing Ahomka perform earlier this year and he really is a star who keeps on delivering first-class performances. Considering the sheer size of the theatre, his rendition of “Santa Fe” fills every inch of the room, and gave me goosebumps. Just incredible. Their performances are stunning and again are a fresh, modern revival of much-loved characters.

However, the standout for me is the Newsboys themselves. It’s not often that an Ensemble receives the same level of praise as its principals, but the love and applause in that room were incredibly overwhelming and every bit deserved.

I’d seen from the previews that there were multiple standing ovations and last night was no different, “Seize the Day” received two standing ovations. Quite honestly I need to go back just to see that routine alone again. Bravo to the director and choreographer Matt Cole - the whole show is sheer genius, and just flawless. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if this production goes on to sweep awards in the future.

There were moments when I couldn’t even believe the level of talent I was watching, those boys were masters of their art.

As mentioned earlier, the theatre is such a great space and the staging has been considered so cleverly, not one section is left forgotten about. The scenery provides the bones of the show, beautifully designed by Morgan Large

I had the pleasure of attending last night with my friend who knew nothing about the show, and it was beautiful to see it through blind eyes. The show really does cater for everyone, and it’s a testament that this show is not just surviving due to its fan base. It’s a momentous show for the London theatre scene. It is here to stay and I'm extremely happy about it.

I wholeheartedly believe Newsies is the show of the year and deserves everything coming it’s way. (I'm running to buy more tickets now before you all beat me to it...)

Newsies is currently booking until April 2023. Book your tickets here.
