REVIEW | Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, New Wimbledon Theatre

Reviewer - BRONAGH

You know it is officially Christmas when the pantomime is in town – oh yes, it is!

Snow White has landed at the New Wimbledon Theatre, much to the delight of many children and adults across the land. With a cast of absolute panto pros, this is sure to get any Grinch-like character into full-blown Christmas mode. The theatre itself is magnificent, the staff extremely friendly and accommodating and some of the most generous legroom of any theatre I have been in.

TikTok sensation Hannah Lowther stars as Snow White, showcasing exactly why she has become a gem in the musical theatre world. She is joined by other musical theatre legends, including Ruthie Henshall and Matthew Kelly who star as Queen Lucretia and Mrs Nelly Nightnurse respectively. Known for their stint on children’s TV Dick and Dom provided much comedic relief as the Court Jesters, accompanied by John Archer as the loveable Odd Job. TV personality Brenda Edwards plays a sparkly and wonderful Spirit of Pantomime, a motherly figure who reassured us that all will be okay. Last but by no means least, Lee Mead plays the rather charming Prince Lee of Lambeth. The Magnificent Seven were brilliant and nailed the classic ‘Hi Ho Hi Ho’ number. The ensemble deserves a special mention, we all know that they are the glue that holds a show together.

The music choices were clear contemporary audience favourites; I noted that many of the songs were from our favourite Tik Tok trends from the past year. Lee Mead also treated us to ‘Any Dream Will Do’… unexpected but it went down a treat amongst the audience.

I can’t remember the last time I went to a pantomime before going to Snow White, and I will be making sure I go every year going forward for sure. Fun jokes only adults understand, jokes only kids will understand, and fake snow – what is not to love, especially when you’re shouting BOGIES for the first time in twenty years.

Theatre is always magical, but nothing will quite beat the magic of a pantomime.

New Wimbledon Theatre is worth checking out, the programme for 2023 is already looking nothing short of amazing.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is performing at New Wimbledon Theatre until 31 December. Book your tickets now.
