Edinburgh Fringe Chats (#65): Without Compromise Theatre, DERBY DAY

As anticipation builds for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, we’re catching up with a range of exciting creatives preparing to bring their work to the world’s largest arts festival this August. In this series, we delve into the stories behind the shows, the inspiration driving the artists, and what audiences can expect.  Today, we’re joined by Without Compromise Theatre to chat more about her show, Derby Day.

Can you begin by telling us about your show and what inspired it?

‘Derby Day’ is inspired by several news articles across Fife towns and the reactions from small communities based on the reason for the crime. These articles range from knife crime in young people to the ongoing violence against women epidemic.

What made you want to bring this work to the Fringe this year?

As a company,we wanted to highlight the lived affects these crimes have on families and young people. We wanted to bring awareness to cycles of violence in the home and give a voice to the survivors of abuse.

How would you describe your show in three words?

Raw, heartfelt and hopeful

What do you hope audiences take away from watching your performance?

The courage to speak up and speak against abusers. Particularly for our male audience, to encourage men to call out their mates on inappropriate behaviour and acknowledge what is wrong.

What’s your top tip for surviving the Fringe?

Immerse yourself in what’s on offer, support other grassroots companies and open yourself up to something different. Oh and make sure you take a day off

Where and when can people see your show?

You can catch ‘Derby Day’ from the 18th August to the 23rd at 19:15 in TheSpace Triplex (Studio). We are also partnered with the Edinburgh Rape Crisis and will be raising funds for them at every show so please donate if you can!
