Smart and distinctly sinister, ‘In Everglade Studio’ by Director Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller, weaves its audience into a thick web of wry humour and emotional discomfort; we sense something lurking just out of vision, and this makes for both an unsettling and intriguing 1-hour running time!
Set in a claustrophobic and gloomy recording studio in 1974 London, the dynamic shared between three very different musicians and their slimy music manager, is ripe with creative and racial tensions, and we are sucked headlong into the workings of their overnight session to complete an album. Safe to say, it does not go smoothly, and things take an unhinged turn, especially in the last 20 minutes.
Each actor portrays a perfect range within the madness of their characters and situations as they unravel during the show, and the musical performances of catchy original songs and covers greatly enhance the viewer’s immersion in the story.
With impressive acting and vocal chops, an intimate and extremely effective theatre space (‘The Box’ AKA an old shipping container temporarily parked in George Square) and a story that contains biting social commentary that demands to be heard, ‘In Everglade Studio’ is by far one of the most memorable shows I experienced at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe!
