If you’re familiar with Strictly Come Dancing, you’ll know dancer Nikita Kuzmin. He’s the latest professional to embark on a UK tour, much to the delight of his fans. Midnight Dancer marks Nikita’s first solo show and tour, and it’s one to be proud of.
The show includes a basic love story between two lead characters, who are joined by an ensemble of dancers. From the moment the dancers take to the stage, an infectious energy takes over and is maintained throughout the show. It’s hard not to be transfixed by the intricate choreography and passionate performers. Nikita has choreographed the show himself, with creative direction and additional choreography from Tom Jackson Greaves. Combining a few different dance styles, the skilled choreography and direction means there’s never a dull moment.
It seems wrong to single out dancers, as they all give outstanding performances, but Andreea Toma, in the lead female role, shines throughout. With a two-decade ballroom and Latin career under her belt, she brings intricate skill and finesse in these areas.
The show is packed full of dancefloor anthems which prove to be real crowd pleasers. Some of these are sung live by Rebecca Lisewski, whose powerhouse vocals and charismatic stage presence elevates the production.
About three quarters of the way through the first act there is an interlude, where Nikita answers a few questions audience members have submitted (presumably before the show). At this particular performance, they were in relation to this favourite English food, as well as his time on Strictly Come Dancing. It was the gala night, and this is Nikita’s show after all, but this segment felt unnecessary. I just wanted the dancing to continue, which I suppose is a testament to how much I was enjoying myself!
Despite this interlude and other tongue in cheek moments, Nikita Kuzmin has created a fantastic show. With a range of vibrant costumes by Rachael Ryan, catchy songs and fabulous choreography, it promises an exhilarating night out.
Nikita Kuzmin’s Midnight Dancer embarks on a UK tour until 24 May 2025.
