REVIEW | The Phantom of the Opera

Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Phantom of the Opera has been a staple within the theatre world, west end and beyond for over 30 years now and I can completely see why it is a staple for those visiting London to see what people are calling “The best west end show of all time”.

We know the iconic songs, we are aware of the tragic love story, but seeing it brought to life on stage is something so magical it’s a sure win in my eyes as one of the best musicals of all time.

Set in 1881 Paris, France, this production stars Killian Donnelly as the ghost “Phantom” of the opera and Lucy St. Louis plays the striking Christine Daaé alongside him to convey the heartbreaking story of a forbidden love. The two of them bring to life the beauty and beast-like tale with the accompaniment of a beautiful ensemble which really entices you into believing you are attending a real opera house. With a beautiful score really firing you up as an audience member and a stunning orchestra to go along with this there truly is so much to love.

Lucy St Louis portrayed Christine beautifully and had a softer tone than one I'd heard in previous phantom recordings. She truly was a breath of fresh air and you truly empathized with her. Killian’s Phantom is powerful, chilling and strong-willed but still manages to remain likeable and you find yourself rooting for his villainous role as opposed to the generic heroic figure of Raoul portrayed by Matt Blaker. Matt Harrop and Adam Linstead were also a true credit to this show, as Monsieur Firmin and Monsieur André. They have some well-needed comic relief throughout the show, a welcome touch to lighten to the tone of some slightly darker scenes.

Matt Kinley’s set design is phenomenal, from the many layers of the opera to be able to reflect the time period we are set in. There’s nothing quite like the scene of the Phantoms Labyrinth slowly unveiling itself to us and the reactions and whispers you hear from the mesmerized audience. The details are exceptional and so well thought out. They were a particular stand out for me as well as the interior of the theatre itself, Her Majesty’s theatre truly is something quite special.

The hype surrounding this show is definitely worth it, this is a theatrical experience that brings the audience together in a state of trance whilst viewing and is not one to be missed.

It’s no surprise at all that this has been nominated for the Best Musical award at the 23rd annual What’s on Stage awards. From beginning to end, you are filled with a constant sense of enchantment. Without a doubt, this is a five-star show, one I anticipate returning to myself many times in the near future, if not just to see the famous Chandelier of the opera house!

Phantom of the Opera is currently playing at Her Majesty’s theatre. Vote online for What’s On Stage Awards and book your tickets to see the show!
