I was welcomed into my own den in the Barber Studio at Leeds Playhouse. With lots of lights and cuddly cushions as I settled in to experience Toucan Theatre’s The Noisy Dinosaur.
Both performers greeted the audience and found a perfect seat for themselves. Letting them know that things may be handed out, but we didn’t have to accept them. I thought this was a lovely touch as it meant that the children could interact with the show in a way that was appropriate to them.
The story was simple, as you’d expect from a children’s show, but it was fun, about a dinosaur who had lost its roar. The other animals helped them with this. Puppetry was using plushies of the animals, and it was perfect for this.
The various animal noises kept the kids engaged, and even the very young ones could enjoy the sounds. I was particularly impressed with the animation that accompanied the story. It was well produced and a great fit for the show. The performer’s tone was very well executed and kept the audience captivated and also (mostly) quiet.
I think as a first experience of theatre, it was ideal as it was a story that they could follow and also enjoy the atmosphere of a theatre, it was also the ideal length as any longer I think their attention span may have been stretched.
A wonderful, magical and sensory experience. The Noisy Dinosaur was perfect for the under 5s and their accompanying adults.
