ED FRINGE 2023 REVIEW | We’ll Have Nun Of It, Sister Productions

Presenting a World Premiere during the fringe is one thing, but bringing that work knowing the confinements of the 60 minute runtime is another, especially when you are staging a musical. So far this year, Sister Productions 'We'll Have Nun Of It' has given us the most elaborate of sets, with benches set out for the performers, plus instruments spread out across the stage. There's been a growing amount of Acto-Muso productions in recent years, so the added pressure here is real, but what hinders 'We'll Have Nun of It' is the unnecessary want to showcase all characters on stage; it feels like it has a lot to say, but not enough time.

The music, which starts off quite Cornish and Folk-like in its opening number, the tempo suddenly shifts for the rest of the production, with a more sombre tone, verging on the emotional side, which misses the mark and becomes heavy; we aren't that invested in these characters, because we've not really had the chance to get to know them. Feeling more like a showcase of what could be offered if a longer run was on the cards, it's clear this half-baked show has potential, but for this Edinburgh run, We'll Have Nun of It fails to make an impact on its story or characters due to the gruelling Edinburgh restraints.

Performing at Underbelly Cowgate until 27 August.
