Interview: ‘You’re Needy’, tasteinyourmouth

Ahead of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024 we’re chatting with a range of creatives who will be heading to the city over August to find out more about their shows. Today we’re chatting with the tasteinyourmouth company about their piece You’re Needy.

Can you tell us a bit about you and your career so far.

We are tasteinyourmouth, a theatre company based in Dublin, made up of Grace Morgan, William Dunleavy and Laoise Murray. We make experimental work for theatre and non theatre spaces that is shiny, uncanny and feminist. Working collaboratively with artists of different backgrounds we create experiences for people who aren’t looking for all the answers but delight in the questions.

The three of us met at university and we’ve been working together ever since. But our careers really started when we first began dancing along to VH1 music videos in our living rooms. We’re still hoping to pivot into popstardom someday.

What is your show about?

You’re Needy (sounds frustrating) is an unique off-site experience for one actor and one audience member set in the bathroom of a (real!) house. It centres on Carrie, a young woman, who has retreated to her bathroom in pursuit of peace, solitude and “wellness”. The piece interrogates how capitalism seeks to control women’s bodies through the “wellness” industry, touching on monotony, meditation, medication, and, of course, Gwenyth Paltrow.

What was the inspiration for You're Needy, Sounds Frustrating and what’s the development process been to get to this stage?

You’re Needy (sounds frustrating) premiered at Dublin Fringe Festival 2023 and was nominated for Best Production and the First Fortnight Award.

As for our inspiration, it was the voices in our head that told us to do it.

What made you want to take You're Needy to the Fringe?

We wanted to share this unique show with a wider audience and hopefully use it as a springboard to other festivals. We’re also really looking forward to meeting some exciting other artists and drinking some exciting pints!

Apart from seeing You're Needy, what’s your top tip for anybody heading for Edinburgh this summer?

Try to sleep, get three meals a day and take your vitamins!

Also get down to see work by fellow Irish artists including; Chicken (Eva O’Connor and Hildegard Ryan),    CRAWLER (Jessie Thompson) ,  HYPER (Ois O'Donoghue/Jaxbanded Theatre),  Impasse (Mufutau Yusuf)  In Two Minds (Joanne Ryan) and  The Weight Of Shadow (Sasha Krohn)

Why should people book You're Needy?

It’s a contemporary performance piece that straddles the line between theatre and live art. It is a highly curated and unique experience for those who are looking to find something innovative, different and intimate. In short: some spooky weird stuff.

When and where can people see the show?

You can find You’re needy at the Summerhall Lobby throughout the month! We are running from the 1-26 August at 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00 daily (not 12,19 August).
