Edinburgh Fringe Chats (#93): Genuinely Confused Theatre Company, I’M AUTISTIC - A NEW MUSICAL

As anticipation builds for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, we’re catching up with a range of exciting creatives preparing to bring their work to the world’s largest arts festival this August. In this series, we delve into the stories behind the shows, the inspiration driving the artists, and what audiences can expect.  Today, we’re joined by Genuinely Confused Theatre Company to chat about their show, I’m Autistic - A New Musical.

01.  Can you begin by telling us about your show and what inspired it?

I'm Autistic - A New Musical is an original musical about three autistic young adults: Lauren, Nat and Chloe. All three are going through big life changes. Lauren discovers she may be autistic when researching for a university essay. Nat has been unlucky in love until he meets the neurotypical Sophie. Chloe is struggling with bullying at school and a strain on her relationship with her best friend, Liv. The show is inspired by our writer's own autistic experience, alongside extensive research. It was written with the aim of creating some much-needed autistic representation in the musical theatre world.

02.  What made you want to bring this work to the Fringe this year?

We felt the show deserves to be seen by a wider audience, and the fringe has such a receptive audience for new work that it felt like the perfect place to debut the show. It's also a great excuse for us to head up to the fringe and get three weeks to watch loads of other companies' work. We've been looking forward to it for months and are so excited now it's so close.

03.  How would you describe your show in three words?

Heartfelt, joyful, tear-jerker

04.  What do you hope audiences take away from watching your performance?

We hope everyone can walk away from our show feeling seen. Whether they are neurodivergent, know someone who is, or just want to learn more about the topic, this show is for you. There is something or someone in the show for anyone to relate to. We meet parents, siblings, friends, partners, teachers, doctors and more.

05.  What’s your top tip for surviving the Fringe?

See as much new work as possible!

06.  Where and when can people see your show?

We are performing at theSpace @ Venue 45 from 8th-23rd August (not 10th or 17th). From 8th-16th we'll be performing at 3.30pm, and from 18th-23rd we'll be performing at 3.20pm.
