Edinburgh Fringe Chats (#100): Andrea Coleman, 3 WHITE GUYS NAMED JOHN
As anticipation builds for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, we’re catching up with a range of exciting creatives preparing to bring their work to the world’s largest arts festival this August. In this series, we delve into the stories behind the shows, the inspiration driving the artists, and what audiences can expect. Today, we’re joined by Andrea Coleman to find out more about 3 White Guys Named John.

1. Can you begin by telling us about your show and what inspired it?
My show is called ‘3 White Guys Named John’, and it’s about how filmmaker John Hughes, musician John Mayer and rock star Jon Bon Jovi changed my life. I made a major life change last year because of Jon Bon Jovi. Ruminating on that decision in the wee hours of a sleepless night, I remembered that in junior high I also did something totally wild and out of character because of John Hughes. Then almost immediately, my mind pinged to another unconventional choice that I made in graduate school because of John Mayer. I thought, hmm they’re all named John… then I was off to the races!
2. What made you want to bring this work to the Fringe this year?
I’d heard that Fringe audiences really appreciate long-form authentic storytelling and because of how revealing this piece is, I really wanted to perform it for people who’d value it. Plus, it’s rare to get to perform a show this many times in a row; I very much wanted that chance.
3. How would you describe your show in three words?
Nostalgic, Inspiring, Funny.
4. What do you hope audiences take away from watching your performance?
I hope audiences are inspired to keep their eyes open for signs and Divine nudges in their own lives. I hope audiences are encouraged to make brave choices. It would also be fun if after my show, they rewatch some of the fantastic movies from the 80s that I talk about in my show.
5. What’s your top tip for surviving the Fringe?
Connection - have wonderful chats with as many lovely people as possible. I really enjoy connecting with people; meeting other artists and creatives lights me up. I think it’ll be the fuel that keeps me going for the run.
6. Where and when can people see your show?
ZOO Playground 1 at 2pm, 1-24 August (not 12)
