Edinburgh Fringe Chats (#82): Annie Lux, CHARMING

As anticipation builds for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, we’re catching up with a range of exciting creatives preparing to bring their work to the world’s largest arts festival this August. In this series, we delve into the stories behind the shows, the inspiration driving the artists, and what audiences can expect.  Today, we’re joined by writer Annie Lux to chat about their show, Charming.

Can you begin by telling us about Charming and what inspired it?

Two years ago, Nigel Miles-Thomas, one of our Fringe Management producers, suggested that I write something for him and Margot Avery, who was performing my show The Portable Dorothy Parker at the Fringe that year. Someone mentioned that Nigel would be perfect as an older Prince Charming, and I started playing with that idea. What would happen, I wondered, if ‘happily ever after’ wasn’t so happy after all? Charming does feature Nigel and Margot, as well as Claire Toeman as the Fairy Godmother.

What made you want to bring this work to the Fringe this year?

If not now, when? None of us are getting any younger! Seriously, I love Edinburgh and the Fringe. This is a brand-new piece, so it’s been quite an adventure! I’m so excited to share it with Fringe audiences.

How would you describe the show in three words?

Cinderella wants a divorce. (“A” doesn’t count as a word, right?)

What do you hope audiences take away from watching your performance?

It’s a comedy, and goodness knows we all need reasons to laugh these days. I hope the audience has as much fun with it as I have.

What’s your top tip for surviving the Fringe?

Pace yourself! And enjoy every minute.

Where and when can people see your show?

Charming is playing at the Forest Theatre at Greenside @ George Street at 17:20 (5:20 pm) from 1 – 23 August (except 10, 17, and 18 August)
