Edinburgh Fringe Chats (#141): Bilal Musa Huka, BLACK BLUES BROTHERS. LET’S TWIST AGAIN!

As anticipation builds for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, we’re catching up with a range of exciting creatives preparing to bring their work to the world’s largest arts festival this August. In this series, we delve into the stories behind the shows, the inspiration driving the artists, and what audiences can expect. Today, we’re joined by Bilal Musa Huka to find out more about her show, Black Blues Brothers. Let’s Twist Again!

1. Can you begin by telling us about your show and what inspired it?

This is our second show. It’s an acrobatic show, full of entertainment, music and breathtaking stunts. In a smoky train station, five guys listen to twist and rock'n'roll music on a vintage jukebox and something amazing is unleashed.  As the music plays, they wow the audience with human pyramids, somersaults and rope routines.

The inspiration comes from the acrobatic tradition of Kenya, our country, which we have reinterpreted in a unique way. This sits alongside an unforgettable rock’n’roll soundtrack including the likes of Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Glenn Miller and Keith Emerson.

2. What made you want to bring this work to the Fringe this year?

This is our fifth time at the Fringe: in previous years our shows have been a huge success! With standing ovations and 5-star reviews; we are grateful that the Edinburgh audiences loved us.

After touring the previous show in over 1,000 dates, to 650,000 spectators we decided to present a brand-new show. This is new challenge but also a sure way to renew the bond with the Fringe audience.

3. How would you describe your show in three words?

Acrobatics, fun and wonder

4. What do you hope audiences take away from watching your performance?

Usually, the audience leaves the room with a smile. We want the spectators to have fun with us and engage with our acrobatics and music. This show is designed as a party to for everyone!

5. What’s your top tip for surviving the Fringe?

Stay calm! Easier said than done. But, as much as possible, take one day at a time, one problem at a time, knowing that you have worked hard to be there and that you are strong and prepared.

Go and see as many shows as possible, but don't forget to sleep!

6. Where and when can people see your show?

Every day at 15.30, from the 31st of July to the 25th of August, at the Underbelly McEwan Hall in Bristo Square.
