Did You Charge Your Phone For The End Of The World? at Pickle Studio at Greenside @ Riddles Court Review
Did You Charge Your Phone for the End of the World? focuses on three work friends who have been tasked with positively branding the asteroid that’s destined to hit Brooklyn, without letting on to the public until created.
The script does seem to follow a sort of pattern, beginning to feel a little formulaic as the piece progresses, but its games and jingles do stand out as the highlights. Yet there doesn’t really seem like any character development happens through the piece, mainly focusing on the impending doom to Brooklyn. I do think the apocalyptic theme could have been stronger, especially with the twist that happens in the second half, the weight of danger and disaster, their mental state of the situation is never really explored.
I will say that with what can only be the tiniest stage at the fringe, the three actors use it to the best of their abilities, even if that does mean having to exit stage a little more often between scenes to get into the right position. The cast have a good chemistry that carries the show but still seem to have an awkward nature to it all.
Did You Charge Your Phone for the End of the World? explores the very real scenario when governments keep secrets from the public so panic does not ensue, instead trying to make a positive of a depression and world altering situation. The piece feeling more like a readthrough could do really well with some physicality, at the moment not being able to tell if it’s a comedy or drama.
