Edinburgh Fringe Chats (#114): Trish Lyons, BUZZ
As anticipation builds for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, we’re catching up with a range of exciting creatives preparing to bring their work to the world’s largest arts festival this August. In this series, we delve into the stories behind the shows, the inspiration driving the artists, and what audiences can expect. Today, we’re joined by Trish Lyons to find out more about her show, Buzz.
1. Can you begin by telling us about your show and what inspired it?
BUZZ is a one-woman show based on a true story drawing on personal tragedy told through the lens of art history, surrealism, post-modernism and contemporary culture. It was inspired by true events, a stalking and an unrelated suicide. It was the witnessing of a suicide that really touched my life. As a witness I tell the story of his death. Sly dark storytelling. BUZZ is a haircut. BUZZ is a swarm. BUZZ is a guitar amp. BUZZ is the sound in my head. BUZZ is a stand-up tragedy.
2. What made you want to bring this work to the Fringe this year?
I’ve never made a one-woman show before–the idea sprang from wanting to develop a performance lecture about art that was itself performance art. LOLS The reflexive impulse in this idea came to life when Marshall Cordell (co-producer) suggested telling personal stories. Everything quickly reconfigured and two months later I had a script. Having the director Lee Brock join the team sealed the deal. We are going to The Edinburgh Fringe 2025!
3. How would you describe your show in three words?
Compelling, smart, moving
4. What do you hope audiences take away from watching your performance?
I hope that the piece inspires conversations about PTSD, mental health and trauma. I also hope that audiences take away new ways of looking at a work of art.
5. What’s your top tip for surviving the Fringe?
You know the score: stay hydrated and try not to have too much fun.
6. Where and when can people see your show?
Assembly Rooms (Front Room) 54 George Street
3:30-4:30 July 31-August 24 (not 11th, 18th)
