Guys Sing Dolls, BBD Productions Review

Written by Jacqueline for Theatre & Tonic

This Fringe, Guys Sing Dolls is the second show being staged by BBD Productions. Guys Sing Dolls very much comes across as the sibling show of Divas: From Stage to Screen which I’ve already given five stars to reviewed here. Guys Sing Dolls is a late-night cabaret in which, as the title suggests, our four guys (Scott Coltman, Chris McLeish, Marc Mackinnon and Alistair Robertson, accompanied by Neil Metcalfe) take on some of the most iconic songs from the theatre world and beyond.

The setlist has been impeccably constructed, ensuring that the show is well-paced and covers a variety of genres and time periods, and ensuring each performer has numerous opportunities to take the spotlight. Though I could easily mention any song from the setlist at this point, a few personal highlights were “As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Sunset Boulevard; “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables, and Adele’s “When We Were Young”. Every number was performed beautifully, and the harmonies were impeccable. These songs are interspersed with some comedic segues, with plenty of anecdotes and self-deprecating humour that kept the show flowing smoothly.

Guys Sing Dolls is a camp and theatrical extravaganza with a huge amount of heart. If you’re a fan of comedy and cabaret, grab your tickets to this sell-out show while you still can!

Guys Sing Dolls returns for one final performance at Paradise in Augustines (Venue 152) on August 23rd at 22:30
