Edinburgh Fringe Chats (#151): Levi Meltzer and Sam Berlin, READYMADES

As anticipation builds for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, we’re catching up with a range of exciting creatives preparing to bring their work to the world’s largest arts festival this August. In this series, we delve into the stories behind the shows, the inspiration driving the artists, and what audiences can expect. Today, we’re joined by Levi Meltzer and Sam Berlin to find out more about Readymades.

1. Can you begin by telling us about your show and what inspired it?
Readymades is a live action-cartoon about a Urinal that runs away from home and the bathroom attendant who’s hot on its trail. The show was inspired by fine art and caricature artisst like Philip Guston, we wanted to create a piece that was as beautiful as it was silly. Sam and I (Levi) come from different backgrounds but were drawn together by common tastes (such as the aforementioned art and caricature) and really wanted to see if on a technical level, we could make a show together. Readymades is the result of all of this.

2. What made you want to bring this work to the Fringe this year?
We initially hadn’t planned to come up to The Fringe this year however once we started sharing the piece with audiences we realised that we were onto something quite special. We received a nomiation for Best new Show at the Brighton Fringe as well as a lovely 4 1/2 star review. The fine folks at Underbelly have been incredibly supportive and really encouraged us to take the show up this year!

3. How would you describe your show in three words?
Run. With. Urinals.

4. What do you hope audiences take away from watching your performance?
A new found appreciation for the everyday appliances we take for granted. Perhaps they have dreams too.

5. What’s your top tip for surviving the Fringe?
Drink water, pee with regularity.

6. Where and when can people see your show?
Readymades is running the 12th to the 24th 15:55 at Underbelly Cowgate. Tickets can be found here!
