Patti Boo Rae’s A Little Miss Christmas, playing at Alphabetti Theatre, delivers a captivating mix of festive cheer and queer celebration. The production reinvents traditional holiday theatre, blending drag performances, lip-syncs, and singalongs with heartfelt storytelling. Its multimedia approach showcases a dynamic homage to queer pageantry, inviting the audience into a world of glitter, humour, and warmth.

The narrative centres on Patti, the reigning five-time winner of the Candy Cane Crown, played with flair and comedic brilliance. As the show unfolds, we watch Patti juggle the roles of host, competitor, and melodramatic diva. Her antics are accompanied by lip-sync performances, audience interactions, and even a swimwear round featuring a hilarious rendition of Blue Christmas.

The set design is both cosy and festive, adorned with wrapped gifts, a twinkling Christmas tree, and a video screen that descended at pointed moments throughout to creatively support the story and costume changes. However, I felt that the show leaned into this a touch too much.

Adding a delightful twist, each night features a surprise guest artist as Patti's rival. On this occasion, Newcastle’s own Betty Thunderthighs stepped in with a PG-rated performance (wink wink) that lit up the talent round, much to Patti’s horror and the audience’s delight. This rotating element ensures no two evenings are the same, keeping things fresh and engaging.

Amid the humour and glamour, Little Miss Christmas also delivers a touching message about embracing the true meaning of the season. The mix of comedy, participation, and heart ensures it’s a festive must-see for audiences seeking something beyond the traditional Christmas fare. Running until 21 December, this show is a sparkling gem in Newcastle’s holiday theater offerings. Don’t miss the chance to vote for your favourite contestant!
