In 2019, Moulin Rouge! The Musical made its debut on Broadway, and three years later, it opened in the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre. Based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce film, now more audiences can enjoy all of the glitz, glamour, and high-energy spectacle with the arrival of its World Tour.

In a whirlwind of romance, rebellion, and razzle-dazzle, Moulin Rouge! is set during 20th-century Paris and follows Christian, a young, idealistic writer, who falls deeply in love with Satine, the sparkling diamond at the Moulin Rouge nightclub. Their romance is passionate but tainted by secrets, sacrifice, and the club’s financial struggles. Powered by a fusion of iconic pop songs from artists like Lady Gaga, Elton John, and Beyoncé, Moulin Rouge! pulls you into a dazzling theatrical spectacle that takes you on an almighty rollercoaster of emotions.

For the most part, this stage production stays true to the storyline of the original film. While there are a few minor changes, they won’t disappoint fans hoping for a faithful adaptation. John Logan weaves the pop songs seamlessly into the narrative, enhancing the emotional beats without disrupting the story’s flow. If you’re looking for some first-class musical theatre numbers with electric choreography, Moulin Rouge! is just the ticket. Sonya Tayeh’s style fizzes with energy, and I know you won’t find a more brilliant opening act 2 opener than what ‘Bad Romance’ has to offer. **chef’s kiss!**

Justin Townsend’s lighting design is suitably lavish and immersive with the style of Moulin Rouge! and immediately gets the audience’s attention. Supported by Derek McLane’s set design, which plunges the audience into a world of opulence and decadence as soon as you step into the auditorium. If you were worried about how the vast set would transfer to the touring circuit, you will not be disappointed!

The cast of this touring show is exceptional. Verity Thompson immediately stuns the audience with the elegance and grace she oozes in her portrayal of Satine. She’s a natural leading lady and an exciting performer to behold, with her rendition of ‘Fireworks’ being particularly stunning. She’s supported by Nate Landskroner as her Christian, having seen him perform years ago in Spring Awakening, it was great to see his talent flourish in this role. Landskroner has a well-rounded understanding of his character and how to unearth the more heartbreaking moments in the story.

Cameron Blakely’s Harold Zidler has an unforgettable stage presence; his theatrical flair is evident from the moment he enters the stage. His comedic timing is sharp and consistently funny! However, one of the show-stealing moments is the explosive partnership between Nini and Santiago (played by Kahlia Davis and Rodrigo Negrini). They are awe-inspiring in their delivery, particularly in the incredibly sexy number ‘El Tango de Roxanne’.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is truly spectacular, spectacular! This show delivers a sparkling spectacle that raises the roof — and your expectations.
