To Be a Prince tells the story of Prince (son of the King and Queen, unsurprisingly), whose life isn’t quite going to plan. Tired of being a background character, he’s desperate to be centre stage in his own story. When he stumbles upon a mysterious lamp, he starts to wonder—could this be his ticket to stardom?

Prince is played by Tom Rolph, a talented vocalist and actor who also happens to be the writer, composer and musical director of the show. With a sprinkle of comedy, some light audience banter and a dash of participation, the piece keeps everyone engaged as Prince explores what it means to finally become the main character.

He tests out being the funniest, the most handsome, even tries to find his own version of a classic ‘princess song’. Along the way, the story offers a fresh take on how the patriarchy has evolved and how the traditional ‘alpha male’ no longer always leads the narrative. There are also hints at something deeper—a quiet nod to the emotional limitations some men face, and how difficult it can be to find space to speak honestly or be truly seen. If this is the intended message, there’s definitely room to bring it into sharper focus.

At just 40 minutes long, the show is a fun and thoughtful look at a character in search of his own story. It’s also a brilliant showcase for Tom’s impressive vocal range, and a great excuse to laugh along with some spontaneous (and slightly chaotic) dance breaks.

To Be a Prince is created by Tom and the team at Grownup Playhouse. They’re heading to the Edinburgh Fringe this August with this show—plus four others. It’s an exciting line-up from a company full of talent, and definitely one to keep an eye on.

To Be A Prince plays at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 1-23 August at the Pickle Studio at Riddles Court.
