Bury The Hatchet, Queen Dome at Pleasance Review

Written by Kerry McLaughlin for Theatre & Tonic
The What If effect on Bury the Hatchet explores an array of scenarios, some in which Elizabeth “Lizzie” Borden murders her father and stepmother and others where circumstances dictated another outcome. The trio of the show all perform vocals and instruments live, with a blend of Irish, Southern and some modern music, quickly establishing Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892 and the emotions of Lizzie, our protagonist and possible villain. The music in itself is almost its own character, weaving through different scenarios and different experiences, proving that no one really knows what happens except the two deceased.
The cast moves seamlessly and swiftly between characters and asides, keeping the audience engaged throughout the performance. By the end, it leaves you with more questions about Lizzie’s guilt and the truth than before you entered the room, which is exactly what the piece is about, proving its capability to entertain, educate and engage simultaneously.
Bury The Hatchet plays at Edinburgh Festival Fringe until 25 August
