How To Drive Yourself Crazy at Studio at theSpaceTriplex Review

How to Drive Yourself Crazy by Mimi Meier and Holly Hart at TheSpace Triplex was a funny and sometimes surprisingly touching experience. The show strings together a series of short sketches about the ups and downs — and outright madness — of womanhood.  It mixes in plenty of relatability, some sharp musical numbers, a dash of vulnerability, and, above all, a whole lot of humour.

Hart and Meier really bounced off each other well — they’ve got great chemistry and the kind of timing that makes the laughs come easily. The audience were chuckling and laughing pretty much the whole way through with almost every joke landing.

The original songs were a crowd pleaser, leaving the audience laughing and tapping along. Mimi’s vocals were strong and confident and you could tell she really felt at home in front of the mic, The songs also gave the show a nice boost of energy whenever the music kicked in.

Holly’s big moment came during her ‘skincare monologue’, which really stood out. She delivered it so beautifully that it completely shifted the mood of the room, and you could see people dabbing their eyes. It was one of those unexpected emotional turns that makes you sit up and pay attention.

What let the piece down was the pacing. The long blackouts between scenes broke things up too much, and it sometimes felt like the momentum got lost just as the performers had built it up. If those transitions were tightened, the show would flow a lot more smoothly and the energy wouldn’t dip. Also , at times, the story felt hard to follow as the sketches shifted from two women sitting in a hospital waiting room to 1940’s housewives within moments of each other with no real transition or explanation.

However, it was still a really enjoyable afternoon full of laughs, music, and some surprisingly heartfelt moments. Holly and Mimi are both talented performers with a lot to offer, and it’s clear the audience appreciated them.

How to Drive Yourself Crazy is running at TheSpace Triplex until the 23rd of August — and if you’re after something that mixes comedy, music, and a touch of heart, it’s worth checking out.
