Eggs Aren't That Easy to Make, Big Sofa Theatre & Counterminers Review

Written by Kerry McLaughlin for Theatre & Tonic
If you’re a fan of rom coms, you’ll absolutely love Eggs Aren’t That Easy to Make. Two friends drunkenly make a pact that if one of them ends up in a same sex relationship, the other will be their sperm donor if they ever want kids. From the get-go of the play, Claire and Dan’s friendship is strong and authentic to the point you actually forget you’re watching two actors. This love also pours through into their partners, who together provide an ensemble that focuses on the situation from all perspectives, evaluating how each decision made influences everyone without becoming redundant.
The piece pokes fun at a multitude of facets when deciding on having kids, and the use of set pieces, using yoga balls as a replacement for chairs, creates a more idyllic atmosphere that lures the audience into a somewhat false sense of security before the last fifteen minutes hit all the right and wrong nerves.
What you come out of this play with is a sense of triumph for the characters; you feel like you’ve left them at a point where they can start working on themselves and their friendships positively.
Eggs Aren’t That Easy To Make plays at Underbelly Bristo Square until 25 August
