Sh!t-faced Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, McEwan Hall at Underbelly Review

Written by Kerry McLaughlin for Theatre & Tonic

Years ago, a random video popped up on YouTube of a Shakespearean troupe getting drunk and performing the sword scene from Romeo and Juliet to the choreography from Michael Jackson’s Beat It. Ever since then, I’ve been absolutely desperate to see Sh!t-Faced Shakespeare live, and coincidentally this year they’re performing one of his comedies I’ve also wanted to see in person, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Unlike most fringe shows, Sh!t-Faced Shakespeare takes place in McEwan Hall, giving you the illusion you’ve been transported to a West End theatre for the night. The show itself is a sight to behold; this particular night, the actor playing Helena was getting drunk for the first time of the run. This led to what I can only describe as chaotic joy. The four actors around Helena were impressive in their improv skills, whilst still making sure the plot continued without too much stalling. This was made pretty hard as Helena was convinced Liam Gallagher was sitting in the front row, getting the whole audience to join in singing Wonderwall. And when she wasn’t starting karaoke, Helena was running through the audience, twice, in rapid concession. If you’re a fan of the “Goes Wrong” series or shows, you’ll go absolutely mental for this.

Sh!t-faced Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream plays at the McEwan Hall at Underbelly, Bristo Square until 24 August.
