Girl Pop!, SHITE Productions Review

Written by Kerry McLaughlin for Theatre & Tonic
There’s a strong understanding of the impact and influence the music industry has on its artists, framed within Girl Pop! The piece isn’t afraid to take a stand on the sordid work of the paparazzi and magazine moguls, which, even though they have decreased in stature since the social media boom, continue to feature prominently. All this whilst still providing essential nineties pop princess melodies throughout with harmonies of the four actors gelling together without feeling lost or inferior to one another, something that can often be an issue with music at the fringe.
A lot of laughs and comedy sadly did not land well, but this feels like an audience issue, which was way too small for the venue this particular night. And I would like the record to state that I wanted to clap and laugh along, but felt the societal dread of weird looks from other audience members if I dared interact.
This was an “on the whim, it fits into the schedule show” for me and having somewhat of an obsession with the Spice Girls as a teenager, this show scratched an itch I didn’t think needed scratching. There’s the making of a strong commentary within Girl Pop! A topic that, as a society, we are becoming familiar with far too late.
Girl Pop! plays at the Big Yin at Gilded Balloon Patter House until 25 August.
