Sweeney Todd at Birmingham Rep Announces Full Cast
The Rep are today thrilled to announce the full cast for our much-anticipated production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Directed by Joe Murphy and designed by Elin Steele, the production will be led by West End, Broadway and international musical theatre star Ramin Karimloo (Phantom of The Opera, Les Misérables, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Addams Family) will play the title role of Sweeney Todd; award-winning radical entertainer, Meow Meow (Emma Rice’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Guys and Dolls) will play the iconic part of Mrs. Lovett; and three-time Olivier Award-winning actor David Bedella (& Juliet, In The Heights, Jerry Springer: The Opera) plays Judge Turpin.
They are joined by Shem Omari James (Jesus Christ Superstar, UK tour) as Anthony Hope, Jo Stephenson (Les Misérables, world tour) as Johanna, Julius D’Silva (Educating Rita, Reading Rep) as Beadle, Jack Gibson (Reverberation, Bristol Old Vic) as Tobias Ragg, Florence Andrews (School of Rock, Gillian Lynne Theatre) as Beggar Woman, Silas Wyatt-Barke (The Prince of Egypt, Dominion Theatre) as Adolfo Pirelli, Emily Ivana Hawkins (Alice: Return to Wonderland, Sherman Theatre) as Ensemble, and Hadrian Delacey (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, UK tour) as Ensemble.
First performed on Broadway in 1979, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler‘s 12-time Tony Award-winning masterpiece is considered one of the greatest musicals ever written. This new production, staged at the Birmingham Rep, is the first major UK revival of the show.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street tells the story of a barber who returns to London seeking revenge on a corrupt judge who destroyed his life. Teaming up with Mrs. Lovett, he begins murdering his customers, and she bakes their remains into meat pies sold to the public.
Completing the creative team alongside Joe Murphy and Elin Steele is Musical Supervisor and Orchestral Reduction Dr John Rigby, Lighting Designer Rory Beaton, Sound Designer Kelsh Buckman-Drage, Movement Director Tinovimbanashe Sibanda, Casting Director Abby Galvin CDG, Musical Director Leo Munby, Associate Conductor Christopher Mundy and Orchestral Management by David Gallagher.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will play at the Birmingham Rep from Saturday 4 July – Sunday 9 August 2026.
