This Halloween, Theatre & Tonic visited a spooktacular Halloween cabaret hosted by JB & Friends. Including hits from all our musical theatre favourites, this event is truly for the die-hard fans.
Hosted in the cosy, downstairs cabaret space at Phoenix Arts Club, it was a fun and friendly evening showcasing some of the darker songs in musical theatre, accompanied with excellent vocal performances. Including songs from the likes of Heathers, Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid, Chicago and more, there was a nice mix of arrangements and harmonies, as well as some outstanding solos.
A particular highlight of the night was the all-male duet of “Suddenly Seymour” from Little Shop of Horrors, where all the high notes were executed flawlessly. Likewise, the all-cast arrangement of “Time Warp” at the end of the first half perfectly encapsulated the cast and audience’s enjoyment.
The space lent itself to the cabaret-style show, with sociable seating arrangements and a nearby bar to a grab a tipple during the show. However, some of the side seating had quite heavily restricted views. This meant that any chorography where the cast went into the audience a bit more was gratefully received.
If you’re looking for your next musical theatre themed night out, JB and Friends is packed with a lot of talent. Find out what they’re up to next by following them on social media at @jb_friendss.
