Returning to London for the first time in over a decade, the iconic Sierra Boggess took over the equally iconic Theatre Royal Drury Lane to celebrate the greatest and proudest achievements of her career to date. For one night only, the concert went through Boggess’ greatest hits, as well as her own personal favourites, and was a spectacular evening of theatre.
Perhaps best known for her strong ties to Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies, it was no surprise that the evening featured a generous helping of Lloyd-Webber’s superb songs, but audiences were spoilt by Boggess performing a rendition of Think of Me in 4 different ways; to celebrate the four versions of the show she’s been a part of, which was a musical masterpiece. If Sierra’s vocals alone weren’t enough, her second surprise guest was none other than her Love Never Dies co-star Ramin Karimloo who performed one of the show's most adored duets to a gobsmacked audience.
Boggess’ first guest was Liz Robertson - who Boggess described as being essential to bring some class to the show - and she unsurprisingly did just that with her infamous rendition of “Lovely” from My Fair Lady.
Sierra Boggess beautifully worked through her resume, singing her favourite songs from each of the shows she’s worked on; from the biggest hits to the shorter running shows, it was a true celebration of Musical Theatre and the varying shows we are so lucky to have in the world. It’s evident that Boggess is a true lover of the industry, and it was so refreshing to see such a colourful set list, and not just the “big hits”. It created an evening of surprise and newness for everyone.
The evening felt truly intimate and special, especially when Boggess brought out some of her grandparent’s love letters and read them out to the audience - telling us how they inspired her love for music and how it still helps her resonate with love, music and emotion today. It was a truly intimate moment, for such a grand room; Sierra really captivated and held the audience the entirety of the evening.
There was something so refreshing about this concert; I think as we move into the more contemporary musicals and the love of big belty numbers, it was so lovely to sit in a room and enjoy such classical vocals and legit-style songs. The power of Boggess' voice is truly sensational and such a treat to witness. I truly hope her next return to the West End isn’t as long a break as this one, as she is without a doubt a crowd favourite on both sides of the pond.
