The Mormons are bringing their iconic mission to the UK, stopping in Birmingham this festive season. Originally premiering on Broadway on March 11—where it continues to captivate audiences—the production made its way to London’s West End in 2013 and has remained a fan favourite ever since. If you're seeing this side-splittingly funny musical for the first time, nothing can truly prepare you for the unforgettable experience that awaits! Just a disclaimer, if you are someone who can be easily offended, this musical isn’t for you!
From the moment we say “Hello!” we are launched into the infectious energy of this show! The Book of Mormon tells the story of a group of American Mormons, focusing on the unlikely pairing of Elder Price and Elder Cunningham. The duo leaves the U.S. for their first mission to spread the word of Jesus Christ in Uganda. However, their task is far from simple, as the villagers are less than optimistic about discussions of God.
Elder Cunningham grapples with building his self-confidence while forming a bond with Nabulungi, the village leader’s daughter. Meanwhile, Elder Price struggles with his inability to convert the villagers, leading him to question his own faith and purpose. This production has an interesting transition between the past and the present of this story which makes it so easy to understand the context of what is happening.
This production, masterfully crafted by writers Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone, is packed with clever modern references and sharp wit. In 2020, the script was updated to reflect contemporary perspectives and move away from outdated tropes, ensuring its humour stays relevant and respectful. Alongside its laugh-out-loud moments, the show dives into meaningful discussions about religion and sexuality, all heightened by its signature comedic edge to leave a lasting impression on audiences. But perhaps The Book of Mormon is best known for its unforgettable soundtrack, with standout numbers like “Turn It Off” and “Man Up “ lingering in your mind long after the final curtain call.
The ensemble of Mormons on this tour is nothing short of sensational. Leading the charge are Adam Bailey (Elder Price) and Sam Glen (Elder Cunningham), whose instant chemistry perfectly captures the contrast between their characters. Supporting them is a talented cast, including Tom Bales, Dan Burstow, Will Carey, Daniel George-Wright, Alex Hayden, Zachary Loonie, Jake Reynolds, and Harry Simpson, who come together to deliver show-stopping musical numbers that truly elevate the production.
However, it's the vibrant ensemble of Ugandans in this production that creates a stunning, harmonious cacophony of sound, leaving the audience in awe. Rodney Earl Clarke, Jay Anderson, Tolu Ayanbadejo, Hayden Cable, Olympia Curry, Kanoumah Diguet, Daniel David Griffith, Savannah Hall, Aaron Levi and Kayode Salina deliver some of the most memorable performances of the evening, truly standing out with their exceptional talent and energy. Leading them are Kirk Patterson (Mafala Hatimbi) and Nyah Nish (Nabulungi) who have beautiful vocal tones but also execute the comedic elements of their characters, Patterson gets a healthy dose of laughs.
The Book of Mormon is a brilliantly crafted, uproarious musical that blends sharp wit, unforgettable songs, and thought-provoking themes. It’s the perfect alternative if you're looking for something fresh in the theatre, and it's no surprise that its legacy endures, cementing The Book of Mormon as one of the best in its genre.
At Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham until 28 December as part of its UK Tour.
