I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical, Gilded Balloon Review

Written by Brian N Keachie and Riona for Theatre & Tonic

If you have ever been on the stage or fancied being a star on the stage (like moi), then this is a dream musical journey come true right down your street! An award-winning musical comedy, I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical, returns to the Fringe this summer with new songs.

This was a musical script of brilliance! Performed by a cast of four, they, alongside the accompanist, were pure quality. I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical follows the life cycle of a theatre kid, from their first audition out of drama school, to the aged diva past her prime. I am struggling to find a standout number to comment on, because I was so thoroughly captured from the opening. The opening number was hilariously meta, filled with references to every musical you can conceivably think of. This, coupled with gorgeous harmonies from the stellar cast, left me wishing for more.

This production delivers an exceptional range in song styles, it was interesting to experience and appreciated by all who attended. Every song encountered numerous different musicals, - so listen very carefully and see how many you can spot!

I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical is a fun-packed musical for every musical fan and stage wannabe! This show is a love (and hate) letter to theatre kids everywhere. As an actor, I found every number to be (sometimes painfully) relatable, with the closing number being beautifully heartfelt. Joel Benedict, Rory Connolly, Samantha Dorsey, and Emma Ralston, alongside writer and MD Alexander S Bermange, have time stepped into my heart.

If we could give it 8 stars - we would!

I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical plays at the Auditorium at Gilded Balloon at the Museum until 24 August
