Lou Wall: Breaking the Fifth Wall, Grand at Pleasance Courtyard Review

Written by Lauren Budd for Theatre and Tonic
Ever seen a layered reality film, but on stage? Lou Wall’s stand up cleverly explores the ‘fifth wall’, setting up the audience perfectly so by the end of the show we are even questioning how we found ourselves there. Lou plays on the viral video that shot her to fame (or did it?) with a whole new perspective. She succeeds in making a comment about fake news, how much content we are unknowingly consuming, shaping our opinions, even our identities, with no real insight into whether any of it is true. Through the use of poems, rap, homemade slideshows, incredible storytelling and untelling, she educates in a fun and fantastic way. The next morning, as I sit in the living room of our Airbnb, I hear my friends in the kitchen still trying to suss her out. If the one of Lou Wall’s aims was for people to talk about the show, mission accomplished!
Lou Wall: Breaking the Fifth Wall plays at the Grand at Pleasance Courtyard until 24 August
