Showstopper! The Improvised Musical, Grand at Pleasance Courtyard Review

Written by Brian Keachie for Theatre & Tonic

This was my second trip in as many years to see Showstopper!—and once again, it didn’t disappoint.

A packed house buzzed with anticipation as we, the audience, were tasked with choosing the plot. After a flurry of hilarious suggestions, the winning idea was: Stuck in a Lift, with songs to be performed in the style of:

  • Six: The Musical

  • Cats

  • Guys & Dolls

What followed was nothing short of astonishing: an entirely improvised musical packed with laugh-out-loud moments, exquisite ballads, and jaw-dropping harmonies—all created on the spot. The pace was electric, the timing flawless, and the ad-lib numbers were worthy of any West End stage.

These performers are masters of their craft, whisking the audience through a whirlwind of story, song, and sheer creative magic—right before our eyes (and ears). I’d happily make this an annual Fringe tradition.

Be warned: tickets vanish fast, so book well in advance.

Showstopper! The Improvised Musical plays at the Grand at Pleasance Courtyard until 24 August
