RENT to return to the West End in 2026
With Jonathan Larson’s beloved musical celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Sonia Friedman Productions and Chris Harper Productions will be bringing RENT to West End audiences in Autumn 2026.
The musical premiered in 1996 at New York Theatre Workshop before transferring to Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre, where it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical. Jonathan Larson, who wrote the book, music and lyrics to RENT, tragically died of an aortic dissection the night before the Off-Broadway opening.
RENT was last staged in the West End in 1998, where it played at the Shaftesbury Theatre. The most recent production took place at the Hope Mill Theatre, where it played in 2020 and was filmed for a broadcast. You can read our review of this production here.
Set during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York City’s East Village, RENT is a rock musical that follows a group of young artists and friends struggling to survive and create. Known for being loosely based on Puccini's classic opera, La Boheme, this musical features a belting soundtrack including songs such as “Take Me Or Leave Me”, “La Via Boheme” and the title song, “Rent”.
A return to the West End is planned for 2026, with the potential venues being the Shaftesbury Theatre or the Duke of York’s Theatre and if my predictions are right - we may see some of the Hope Mill Theatre involved in this production!
