Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’ smash hit musical SIX unveils a new cast at the Vaudeville Theatre this March. SIX, now in its 4th year at the venue, tells the story of the SIX wives of Henry VIII and their lives with him. They decide to hold a competition to see who’s had it worse. Each Queen has their time to shine by singing about what they’ve been through. In the end, we discover that it is all a ploy and that in actual fact, it’s time to become more than just some words in the stupid rhyme and to rewrite her-story.
The music in SIX is catchy from start to finish. The lyrics are detailed and witty. You can’t help but tap along. You definitely leave the theatre with more than a couple of earworms. Huge credit to Marlow and Moss as the whole show radiates warmth, fun, and energy. It’s an incredibly slick production in every department. Moss directs alongside Jamie Armitage and the combination is magic. Choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille is polished and precise. Every move is crisp and clean. It is a joy to watch. The costumes by Gabriella Slade are just stunning. They are a real feast for the eye. They are so intricate and wonderfully unique to differentiate the Queens. Each takes a different colour. It’s beautiful.
For a show that has been running a while it still feels fresh and alive. The new cast plays a big part in that. Some of the cast have been part of the Queendom before, so it was lovely to see what they would bring to the table this time, and I can wholeheartedly say that each and every performer takes their character and imbues a small bit of them. Jaz Robinson as Catherine of Aragon was so strong and full of sass. She was magnetic. Thao Therese Nguyen’s Anne Boleyn was simply hilarious. Every choice was well thought through. Hana Stewart brings Jane Seymour to the stage full-time with such charm. Her rendition of ‘Heart of Stone’ was so emotional and raw. Simply stunning. Returning to the role of Anna of Cleves is Dionne Ward-Anderson. Her take is brilliant. She injects so much humour and fun into Anna. It’s infectious. Caitlyn Du Kuyper takes on Katherine Howard with so much wit and life. Her moments of vulnerability were heartbreaking. Rounding out our queens was Amelia Kinu Muus as our survivor, Catherine Parr. She more than held her own, some would say she smashed it. Powerful and such a presence. On top of all their above, all of our queens can sing and I mean really really SING. It was lovely to hear them tear up the vocals and add their own twist to the signature riffs and runs. Absolute vocal powerhouses without exception.
Honestly, if you haven’t seen ‘SIX’ yet, then where have you been? I can see this fabulous show reigning supreme for years to come! If an evening of pure unadulterated delight is what you are looking for then get yourselves down to the Vaudeville Theatre pronto.
