Following its sold-out premiere in Bristol last year, the new musical adaptation of Starter for Ten returns as the ultimate dose of nostalgia for fans of David Nicholls’ 2003 novel and its 2006 film adaptation.

With a story rooted in the 1980s, we follow Brian Jackson (played by Adam Bregman), a young boy who aspires to meet his idol, Bamber Gascoigne and make it onto the iconic TV quiz show, University Challenge. As he navigates the pressures of starting university, he also has to deal with first love, new friendships, and the defining differences between his working-class background and his university life. Emma Hall and Charlie Parham’s book for the musical allows the story to flourish in its delivery, making it such a heartwarming trip to the theatre.

This is perfectly supported by the show’s soundtrack by Hatty Carman and Tom Rasmussen. It bursts to the seams with energy, featuring musical sounds that capture the vibrant, nostalgic spirit of the 1980s so well. “Weightless” and “For The Story” are particular bangers in the show! Lee Newby’s slick and vibrant colourful design is captivating, with the quiz show inspiring lots of playful ideas, including Brian’s family using the panel as their table on Christmas Day.

The casting in this production is sublime. You have irresistibly fun people like Mel Giedroyc, who reprises her roles as Brian’s mum Irene and Bamber Gascoigne’s irresistible sidekick Julia Bland, who has a particularly physical presence with her comedic timing and presence.

The heart and soul of this musical come from the students themselves, brought to life by a fantastic ensemble cast — some making their professional debut in this production. Their energy in executing Alexzandra Sarmiento’s punchy choreography is admirable and really elevates the expansive staging. Adam Bregman is a fantastic leading man, while Asha Parker Wallace’s take on Rebecca proves she’s a real star in the making. Will Jenning’s Patrick is particularly hilarious, delivering laughs throughout the show.

Starter for Ten is a joyous, nostalgia-packed ride that hits all the right notes — clever, heartfelt, and endlessly entertaining. We’re so excited to see where the infectious energy and universal appeal of this story goes next!

Starter For Ten plays at Birmingham Rep until 1 November 2025.
